HexSpell is a free daily word honeycomb puzzle inspired by the NYT Spelling Bee. Each day, seven letters are arranged in a hexagonal hive — one center letter surrounded by six outer letters. Your goal: make as many words as you can using those letters, always including the center letter. Every word must be at least four letters long. Find the pangram — the word that uses all seven letters — and you'll earn a big bonus! HexSpell tracks your rank from Novice up to Grandmaster as your score climbs. There are no ads, no account required, and the game works fully offline. It's part of PuzzleBoxs, a collection of ten free daily word puzzles. HexSpell: How Many Words Can You Make? This is the daily question that sends vocabulary lovers back every morning. Whether you love the popular honeycomb word game from the New York Times or you're looking for a free Spelling Bee alternative, HexSpell delivers the same daily word puzzle free experience with no paywall and no subscription. Play unlimited spelling bee style games — a fresh puzzle every day, forever free.
How to play HexSpell: A hexagonal hive of seven letters appears on screen — one center letter (highlighted in gold) and six outer letters in gray. Click or tap the letters to build words, or type directly on your keyboard. Every valid word must be at least four letters long and must include the center letter. Letters can be used more than once. Submit your word to earn points: four-letter words score 1 point, five-letter words score 5 points, and longer words score their letter count. The pangram — a word using all seven letters at least once — earns an extra 7-point bonus. Use Delete to remove the last letter, Shuffle to rearrange the outer letters for a fresh perspective, and Submit to check your word. Your rank rises from Novice through Apprentice, Scholar, Expert, Master, and finally Grandmaster at 70% of the maximum score. Found words appear in the collapsible word list below, with pangrams highlighted in gold.
HexSpell is inspired by the NYT Spelling Bee and the honeycomb word puzzle genre, but it is a completely independent free game. Unlike the New York Times Spelling Bee (which requires a paid NYT Games subscription), HexSpell is 100% free, requires no account, collects zero user data, and works fully offline. HexSpell is not affiliated with or endorsed by The New York Times.
Seven letters appear in a hexagonal hive — one center letter (gold) and six outer letters (gray). Click or type letters to build words, then press Submit. Each valid word must be at least 4 letters long and must include the center letter. Letters can repeat. Four-letter words score 1 point; longer words score their letter count. Finding the pangram (a word using all 7 letters) earns a +7 bonus. Your rank rises from Novice to Grandmaster as your score grows.
A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters in the hive at least once. Finding the pangram is the biggest challenge of each daily puzzle — it earns a special +7 bonus on top of the word's normal score, and it's highlighted in gold in your found-words list. Every HexSpell puzzle is guaranteed to have at least one pangram.
HexSpell has six ranks based on your score as a percentage of the maximum possible score: Novice (0%), Apprentice (5%), Scholar (15%), Expert (30%), Master (50%), and Grandmaster (70%). Reaching Grandmaster means you've found a very strong set of words — excellent players reach it regularly, but it always requires finding the pangram.
